HISTORY: Zubiri ( the name means “the bridge village” in the Basque language, Euskera) is the main city in the area. The medieval bridge, the Puente de la Rabia, which crosses the Rio Arga is the subject of local legends, including the belief that the bridge had healing powers and that the relics of Santa Quiteria are buried in one of the pillars of the bridge. Adjacent to the bridge once stood the pilgrim hospital of Santa Magdalena. In the 19th century there were a series of civil wars in Spain called the Carlist Wars. During one of these the church was used as a barracks and was destroyed in 1836.
DIRECTIONS: After Zubiri the Camino passes through the Magna (magnesium) Mining complex and up to the hamlet of Ilarratz. Approximately 100 metres further down the road from Ilarratz, on the right-hand side of the road, is the Abbey of Eskirotz and Ilarratz. The buildings originate in the 12th century and incorporate the former parish church of Santa Lucia. Having been in ruins for many years the site has been purchased by two pilgrims who wish to restore the Abbey as a resting place for pilgrims. Visitors are welcome.
