Previously a there was restaurant and a bar were available but both have now closed down and no new buyers appear in prospect.

Note for walkers: the path from Riego to Molinaseca involves some steep descents. Again walking sticks or a staff are essential. The alternate route on the road is substantially longer (2.2 km) and while pretty it is not as stunning as the main Camino but again may well be a safer option if you do not have walking sticks or a staff.

Riego de Ambrós is a beautiful village to stroll through with wooden balconies jutting from almost every house. Although many houses are abandoned, this picturesque village is gradually being resuscitated by the Camino and its proximity to Ponferrada. Several houses have been renovated and a convenience store / café has opened. The pretty little chapel you pass on your way in on the left is the 16th century Ermita de San Sebastián.

The descent from Riego is particularly steep and can be very slippy when wet. If you wish to avoid this difficult descent head for the restaurant and there rejoin the main road. You can rejoin the Camino when the Camino crosses the main road about 1.5km further down the road.
