San Xil translates to Saint Giles who is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers (fourteen saints noted for their intercession being particularly effective, especially against disease). Saint Giles is also attributed with founding the abbey at Saint-Gilles-du-Gard on the via Tolosana close to Arles.
