Barbadelo

☕ Bar / Café 🛒 Groceries ⚕️ Pharmacy

Hamlet with church dedicated to Santiago (open 15:00-18:00).

Barbadelo is now a small village, but it was historically significant enough to be mentioned in the Codex Calixtinus—a 12th-century manuscript often regarded as the first-ever guidebook for the Camino and, indeed, the first guidebook of any kind in Europe.

In its heyday, Barbadelo was home to a monastery that was dependent on the large abbey at Samos. Today, the village’s former importance is reflected in the 12th-century Romanesque church of Santiago de Barbadelo, which remains as a testament to its rich history.

Barbadelo shares its recognition in the Codex Calixtinus with other notable villages on the Camino, such as Portomarín, Palas de Rei, Boente, and Ferreiros.
