Portomarín
A new town, built when the old one was flooded by the waters of the new reservoir. The fortified Church of St Nicolás was dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt in its present town centre position.
Plenty of shops, banks etc. Swimming possible. Go down the steps between the bridge and the youth hostal. Two bakeries specialise in almond Tartas de Santiago.
Church and Mass - Iglesia de San Nicolás, originally constructed 12th and 13th c. The portal is by Master Mateo, famous as the builder of the Pórtico de la Gloria of Santiago Cathedral. Daily Mass 19:00 - followed by pilgrims’ blessing.
