Castromaior takes its name from the original Celtic hill fort (castro) that once stood here. The remains of this Iron Age settlement, dating from the 2nd century BC to the 1st century AD, have been archaeologically excavated.

The excavation site is located to your left just after you leave Castromaior.

The local authorities have chosen not to heavily promote the site, as they are concerned about potential damage from increased visitor traffic.

Another site worth visiting in Castromaior is the 12th-century Romanesque Church of Santa María de Castromaior. Despite its small size, it is well-preserved and notable for:

A wooden Romanesque statue of the Virgin Mary.

A Baroque retablo (altarpiece).
