Ventas de Narón
2 bars. Plaza, rest area with fuente.
In medieval times, Ventas de Narón was known as Sala Regine and is mentioned in the Codex Calixtinus. The current name, Ventas (meaning "sales"), suggests that it was once a trading post on the Camino.
The town was historically home to a pilgrim hostel built in the 13th century by the Knights Templar. While the hostel no longer exists, the Capilla de Santa María Magdalena, located on the outskirts of the hamlet, is a surviving remnant.
If you wish to visit the chapel, there is a phone number on the door—someone from the village will come to open it for you.
Ventas de Narón was also the site of an 820 AD battle, where Christian forces defeated an invading army from the Emirate of Córdoba.
Today, Ventas de Narón is a peaceful hamlet, offering an excellent lunch stop. Both café-bars serve good food, but my personal preference is Casa Molar.
