Approximately 300 metres before Ligonde (42.85523, -7.77739), you will come across the Cruceiro de Ligonde, one of the most famous stone crosses (Cruceiros) on the Camino Francés.

Dating back to 1670, this historic cross features:

One side: An image of the Virgin Mary holding Christ in her arms.

The other side: Christ on the cross, with a skull at the foot of the crucifix, symbolizing Golgotha (the Place of the Skull).

This is a significant and well-known landmark on the Camino, rich in symbolism and history.

Ligonde was home to a pilgrim hospital from 956 to 1753, along with a pilgrim cemetery. Today, the only remaining trace of the cemetery is a simple cross on a stone wall, serving as a quiet reminder of its history.

The Albergue Fuente del Peregrino in Ligonde offers donativo tea, coffee, water, and fruit—a welcome refreshment on a hot day. However, I usually prefer taking an extended break at Casa Mariluz, which is about 500m further.

Just after Ligonde, near the municipal albergue, the Camino cuts off a corner, but the path can be quite tricky. If you don’t have walking poles, I recommend walking the slightly longer but safer route by staying on the road.
