6 km detour to Vilar de Donas. Take the lane on the right after Portos (not the path at km 71). The Church of El Salvador has 14th c. wall paintings and impressive effigies of Knights of the Order of Santiago, who settled here in 1184. Their role was not to protect pilgrims, although they did provide hospitals for them, but to protect Christian Spain against the Moors. Open Tues-Fri 10:00-15:00, Sat-Sun 13:00-19:00. Try house no 2 for key if the church is closed.

The enormous ant statues at O Paso da Formiga (which translates to "The Passage of the Ants") are both strange and amazing, making for a unique Camino sight.

In addition to the quirky statues, the Spanish omelette here is pretty good!

Both Portos and Lestedo are fabulous afternoon stops, offering a great place to rest and recharge before continuing your journey.
