Muruzábal
Stage Notes & History
DIRECTIONS: Small village with 2 albergues and a hostal. Bar Los Nogales has a menú.
DIRECTIONS: If making the detour to the Church of Saint Mary of Eunate, turn left past the church. NB There is no longer an albergue at Eunate.
HISTORY: The Church of Saint Mary of Eunate lies on the Monreal/Las Campanas road, 3 km off the Camino. The 12th c. octagonal church is surrounded by a series of arches. Opinions vary as to its origins. It may have been a Knights Templar church or it may simply have been a pilgrims’ burial ground. There is a tradition of walking barefoot three times around the exterior of the church to help achieve in an inner comtemplative calm. The detour to the church adds about 4km to today's stage and few pilgrims make the detour. Definitely recommended. Check opening times
DIRECTIONS: If not taking the detour to Eunate, turn right just after the village.
