If making the detour to the Church of Saint Mary of Eunate, turn left past the church. NB There is no longer an albergue at Eunate.

The Church of Saint Mary of Eunate lies on the Monreal/Las Campanas road, 3 km off the Camino. The 12th c. octagonal church is surrounded by a series of arches. Opinions vary as to its origins. It may have been a Knights Templar church or it may simply have been a pilgrims’ burial ground. There is a tradition of walking barefoot three times around the exterior of the church to help achieve in an inner comtemplative calm. The detour to the church adds about 4km to today's stage and few pilgrims make the detour. Definitely recommended. Check opening times

If not taking the detour to Eunate, turn right just after the village.

The Camino passes through Muruzábal and is joined by the alternate paths of the Camino Aragonese. The Camino Aragonés which starts as the via Tolosana from Arles in France and becomes the Camino Aragonés when it passes into Spain at Somport in the Pyrenees. It then follows the course of the River Aragón until it merges at Muruzábal or Obanos with the Camino Francés.

From Muruzábal there is a detour to the church of Santa María de Eunate ( 42.67240, -1.76145). The church is a 12th century Rommanesque octagonal shaped church whose exact origins are unknown, but which may have been originally built by the Templars. The detour to the church adds about 4km to today's stage and while the church is an architectural little gem few pilgrims make the detour.
