HISTORY: A large Cathedral city which is the capital of La Rioja. The heart of the city is the Paseo del Espolón. Tourist information: c/Portales 50. The previous Collegiate church was given the designation Cathedral by Pope John 23 in 1959. Parts of the interior are from the 15th century with the façade being added in the 18th century. The Cathedral has the figure of St. James carved in the choir stalls. In the Plaza San Agustín is the Museo de la Rioja, which contains many religious objects rescued from abandoned monasteries in the area. Tues-Sat 10:00-14:00 & 16:00-21:00, Sun 11:30-14:00. Free.
HISTORY: Church and Mass - Near the iron bridge over the river is the Gothic Church of Santiago el Real, 16th c. with a splendid statue of Santiago Matamoros over the main entrance. Mass 08:30 and 19:30 daily (Sun 10:30 & 19:30).
HISTORY: Detour to Clavijo 40 km. The village of Clavijo, 18 km south of Logroño, is the site where legend has it that in 844 St James miraculously appeared on his white charger to help the Christians. The castle at Clavijo is in a spectacular setting with a cross of Santiago erected by the council of the Military Orders. On the hillside opposite is a hermitage of St. James. Enquire at Tourist Information in Logroño about buses to Clavijo and accommodation there.
