The route via Olmos de Atapuerca is 1.5 km shorter, follows paths through cornfields (no villages) and meets with main route just before the flyover crossing the motorway.

In Villafría, cross the Madrid-Irún railway then an 8 km hike into the centre of Burgos along the main N1 (the N1 has broad pavements). Watch out for a crucial turning R before a road junction after about 5 km (at a tall building with a Telefónica sign on top) or you will lose the yellow arrows leading to the route through the centre of the city.
