HISTORY: The main claim to fame of the town, also known as Puente de Orbigo, is the Bridge of the Paso Honroso - 20 arches, 204 m long and one of the oldest in Spain. Walkers and cyclists (but not motorists) enter the town over this bridge. The “Hospital” in the name was a pilgrim hospital founded by the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem.

DIRECTIONS: There is a choice of two routes to Astorga. Again both are waymarked. The traditional way via the road route is tedious. The modern alternative, the walkers’ route on quiet minor roads and tracks, is much more attractive and safer. The two routes meet at San Justo de la Vega.

DIRECTIONS: At the end of town, keep straight on, follow disused road initially. On reaching the main road, turn right and continue on this road for about 12 km.
DIRECTIONS: Walkers route to Astorga (16.4 km)
DIRECTIONS: At the end of town, at a yellow arrow on the next to last house, turn right. The route follows a marked track. Unsuitable for touring bikes when wet.
