Detour. The Monastery of Carracedo at the small village Carracedo del Monasterio. A 4 km detour to this large, impressive Cistercian monastery, open 10:00-13:00 & 16:00-19:00 (not Mon). There is a map in the Main Square of Camponaraya. The route is well waymarked with arrows: from the square follow the carretera de Narayola (2 kms), cross Narayola, and 2 kms more through the Calle Real, after crossing under the Autovía del Nordeste A-6, you reach the monastery.

Leaving the albergue, you take the road to Cacabelos, 3 kms and you reach Cacabelos center.

Camponarya was originally two villages Campo on the west bank of the river and Naraya on the east bank, which grew from its position on the Camino. In modern times Camponaraya has developed a strong pharmaceutical industry in addition to the traditional wine industry. You have now entered the famous Bierzo wine growing region and a long-standing Camino tradition holds that on your exit of Camponaraya that you visit the Viñas del Bierzo Coop (42.58421, -6.67560) and partake of their offer of a glass of wine and a tapa for €1.50. If you stayed overnight in Ponferrada it may seem strange to be drinking wine at 9:30 in the morning but go with it!
