A town in the heart of the fruit and wine growing region of El Bierzo. Excellent wines, but hardly known outside Spain. The village has interesting buildings and a shop, built on the site of the former San Lázaro Hospital, one of five such hospitals in Cacabelos.

Méson El Apóstol Santa María 27, half way on route through town, before market and church. Good 9€ menú. Méson El Refugio de Saul, c/Calexa Sixtina. Good 8€ menú.

Just below the bridge is an area that is zoned off for swimming and sunbathing. The water whilst not warm is not nearly as cold as at Molinaseca and there is a diving board although some of the crazier locals choose to dive off the bridge into the river. Diving off the bridge into such a shallow river is not something I would recommend.

Again, this is exceptional wine country and a bottle of wine can sometimes be cheaper than bottled water. Sharing a bottle of wine on the banks of the river after a swim and watching other pilgrims crossing the bridge can be a wonderful way to spend an hour or two.

The municipal albergue is built around an old church and consists of two berth cabins.
