Shortly after passing through the village of Pieros, a well-marked turn to the right offers a very pleasant route through vineyards and away from the highway. It passes through the village of Valtuille de Arriba.

Pieros at one stage was a base for the Knights Templar but nothing remains of their presence. The church in Pieros is gorgeous and was dedicated in 1086 to San Martín de Tours by bishop Osmundo of Astorga who also commissioned the Pons Ferrata bridge in Ponferrada.

Just after Pieros you will be signposted off the road to your right to follow the main Camino through Valtuille de Arriba. If you are tired, you can continue on the road and save yourself 1.0km on the way into Villafranca. However, it is mainly road walking and most people prefer the much nicer walking along the main Camino via Valtuille.
