Pereje
The busy, friendly bar about 50 m away serves very good meals
The road to Pereje and Trabadelo is by the old Nacional 6 (N6) road which is relatively quiet since the opening of the Autovia 6 (A6) which towers above on giant concrete platforms. Walking by the road can be a little demoralising but if you look to you left you are also walking by the side of the river Valcarce which gently bubbles by your side.
In 1118 Queen Urraca donated a hospice to Pereje under the auspices of the monastery at O Cebreiro. But eighty years later this caused a dispute with the monastery at Villafranca which claimed to own the village of Pereje itself. King Alfonso IX refused to adjudicate on the issue and eventually the disputed ownership went up to Pope Urban II who ruled in favour of the monastery at O Cebreiro. The hospice stayed open in the service of pilgrims until the dissolution of religious institutions in 1835.
