HISTORY: A tiny village of 20 houses which is a high point of the pilgrimage. Cebreiro developed from and for the pilgrimage. There was a hospital here from the 11th c. to 1854, run by monks from the 16th c. Abbey of St Gerard of Aurillac in France. The 12th c. Church of Santa María has relics including a 12th c. statue of the Virgin, which reputedly inclined its head after a miracle took place. Outside the church is a bronze bust of the late priest, D Elias Valiña, who devoted his life to O Cebreiro and to the practical and academic aspects of the pilgrimage. You can see pallozas nearby, the typical Galician thatched buildings of Celtic origin. In one is a small museum.
HISTORY: Church and Mass - Iglesia Santa Maria A Real Do Cebreiro. Daily International Mass 19:00h, followed by pilgrim blessing.
PLAIN: Small shop selling basic supplies and several souvenir shops.
