Castañeda
In medieval times, pilgrims were asked to carry limestone from Triacastela (about 25 km before Sarria) to Castañeda.
Here, the limestone was slaked in the ovens and later used in the construction of Santiago Cathedral—making Castañeda an important historical site along the Camino Francés.
Though the practice has long since ended, the historical connection between pilgrims, Castañeda, and the cathedral’s construction remains a fascinating part of Camino history.
