HISTORY: About two hundred metres before you reach the top of the Alto del Perdón, you will find a small fountain that trickles water. This is the Fuente Reniega (the fountain of denial). The legend associated with this fountain was that there was once a very thirsty pilgrim who was tempted by the devil with the offer of fresh water in return for denying Saint James. The good pilgrim refused to deny Saint James and was rewarded by an apparition of the Saint who led the thirsty pilgrim to this fountain. The modern fountain may provide a seat to rest your feet but the fountain is completely unsuitable for human consumption.

DIRECTIONS: During peak season there is often a refreshment van when you reach the top of Alto del Perdón which can be extremely welcome.

DIRECTIONS: Although there have been some recent improvements, the descent from Alto del Perdón is one of the most difficult parts of the whole Camino. A staff or walking sticks are, if not essential, definitely recommended. It is a steep and rocky descent which requires you to go slowly and take great care.

DIRECTIONS: The monument on your left at the start of the descent is to victims of the civil war.
