At the top of the steep climb up towards Mañeru many pilgrims make small crosses and place them in the fence that seperates the Camino from the A12 highway. Just before you come to the roundabout at the entrance to Mañeru on the mound to your right is a beautiful 16th century Cruceiro (a stone cross). Mañeru has a very pleasant small square along Calle Fe where you can recharge your water supply and rest on some shaded benches.

Mañeru was a base for the Knights Hospitaller of St John during the middle ages. They effectively owned the town in terms of taxation rights from 1290 until 1555 when the town's folk collected 800 ducats (just over €100,000 in modern money) to buy out the Knights.
