The steep hike up to Monjardín tells that was built on a natural high point which would be easy to defend. It is believed that there has been a fort here since Roman times. The town is dominated by the remains of the castle of San Esteban de Deyo. The Codex Calixtinus tells of a battle here between Charlemagne and the Navararran King Furré but there is no contemperaneous evidence to support this story. We do have good evidence to show that the Sancho I King of Pamplona captured the town in 908 from the Saracens. Legend says that Sancho I was actually buried in the castle but there is little left of the original castle to verify this. There is however, a bust of Sancho I outside the Fronton court.

Monjardín's Moorish heritage is evident in the name of the fountain called Fuente de Moros (the fountain of the Moors). This impressive 13th century Gothic fountain was restored in 1991 and is found on the right side of the Camino about 300 metres before you reach the village.

The square modern buildings that you see on your left as you enter and exit the village houses both a winery and a restaurant. The winery, Bodegas Castillo de Monjardín (www.monjardin.es/), welcomes visitors but remember you will have to carry any wine you buy another 12.4km if you want to enjoy it with your evening meal.
