HISTORY: The town is dominated by the 15th/16th c. monastery of Santa María la Real, originally a Cluniac foundation. The church contains the tomb of Blanche of Navarra, many other royal tombs and a Renaissance cloister. Closed Mondays. The large municipal swimming pool complex across the river is free to pilgrims with a ticket from the albergue.
HISTORY: Detour to San Millán de la Cogolla. A variant of the route, well waymarked with yellow arrows and direction change signs, follows the Camino Medieval and the Camino Real for 16 km from the albergue at Nájera to San Millán and the two monasteries of Suso and Yuso. Suso is the upper Visigothic monastery, dating from the 11th c, the monumental Yuso down in the valley is mainly 16th to 18th c. The tomb of San Millán has a life size effigy of him surrounded by pilgrims. A guided tour is the only way to see Yuso. Both are closed on Mondays, except in August. Follow the Lr 206 from San Millán to rejoin the Camino at Azofra, about 13 km.
