Soon after Grañón, you leave La Rioja and enter the autonomous region of Castile and León, Province of Burgos.

There is a lovely little water fountain just up the steps at the entrance to Grañón. Grañón is the last town in La Rioja before you enter the province of Burgos. The town predates most of its neighbours with records showing that a castle was built here around 885-889 on the orders of King Alfonso III of Asturias. The town grew up around the castle, but nothing remains of the castle or the original city walls. In common with many of its neighbours the town swapped hands between Navarra and Castilla. With the re-routing of the Camino by Saint Dominic, Grañón boomed as did many towns on the Camino. Several pilgrim hospitals were built in the town.
