In 2010 during improvement works to the Camino an unmarked civil war grave dating from July till November1936 was found. The skeletal remains of 134 men and 1 woman have so far been recovered but only 15 of these have been identified. The recovered remains have now been reburied in a graveyard in Villafranca Montes de Oca. It is thought there could be the remains of a further 160+ victims laying somewhere in the vicinity as yet undiscovered. The monument at the site of the largest grave is a reminder of the terrible suffering that Spain endured during its civil war.
