The Church of the Asunción, which you can see from afar, has 15th c. frescoes and altarpiece and a Romanesque door. If locked try 8 Plaza Iglesia; Sra Elisa has a key and a sello.

Villatuerta was not originally on the Camino. It wasn't until Estella was founded in 1090 that the Camino was re-routed through Estella and by extension Villatuerta.

If you are staying in Villatuerta there are not many options for an evening meal with the exception of the large sports centre (polideportivo). On a sweltering day the large outdoor pool at the polideportivo looks very attractive.

Although Villatuerta's roots date back to Roman times, there is very little of historical interest left in the village with the exception of the impressive 14th century church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción which you pass as you leave the village. In front of the church is a sculpture of San Veremundo. San Veremundo is the patron saint of the Camino in Navarra. He was an 11th century monk in the monastery of Irache who was noted both for his dedication to Our Lady but also for his care of the pilgrims. He would often take food from the abbey to give to hungry pilgrims. There are legends of several miracles worked by San Veremundo in relation to him giving sustance to pilgrims, but my favourite is the legend that in order to better attend to the pilgrims, the saint caused wine to sprout from a fountain that was near the monastery. Tomorrow, you will visit the modern-day wine fountain that owes its origins to this legend and the generosity of the local winery in Irache. San Veremundo's connection with Villatuerta is that he was born here but this fact is disputed by another by village called Arellano which is about 8km south west of Villatuerta. Both villages therefore guard the reliquary with the remains of San Veremundo for 5 years at a time, changing over on the 3rd of September. San Veremundo's feast day is March 8th.
