Sansol gets its name from Saint Zoilo who is the patron saint of Carrión de los Condes some 200 km further along the Camino in the province of Palencia. There is a major monastery in Carrión dedicated to San Zoilo and it is believed that Sansol housed a small pilgrim hospital under the jurisdiction of the monastery in Carrión and hence it was named as an outpost of Monastery of San Zoilo.

San Zoilo was one of about 20 martyrs killed in early 304 in Córdoba during the Diocletianic Persecution (this was the last persecution of Christians prior to the Christianization of the Roman Empire but none the less was a particularly vicious persecution). The legend is that San Zoilo was the most notable among the 20 Christians chosen for a show trial and was therefore tried first with the hope that they could use either bribery or torture to get Zoilo to recant his Christian faith. The judge first attempted to bribe and induce Zoilo but Zoilo in return attempted to evangalize the judge. The judge then ordered Zoilo to be flogged but not so severely that he would die. The severe flogging had no effect so the torturer decided to remove Zoilo's kidneys using his sword. Again this had no effect on Zoilo's resolution to maintain his faith. In frustration, the judge took his own sword and beheaded Zoilo and ordered the other 19 to be beheaded immediately.

In a similar fashion to the remains of Saint James, the remains of San Zoilo were uncovered by a mystical vision to the Bishop of Córdoba in the year 613. In the 11th century the Count of Carrión, Gómez Díaz, arranged for the remains of San Zoilo to be transferred to the Monastery in Carrión which had already been dedicated to him.
